2015 First Quarter Activities Report
<h2>First quarter production up 15%, GLNG first LNG expected around the end of Q3</h2> <p>Santos today announced higher first quarter production, higher sales and significant progress at the GLNG project.</p> <p>First quarter production of 14 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe) and sales volumes of 15.2 mmboe were 15% and 10% higher respectively than the corresponding quarter. </p> <p>Santos Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer David Knox said that Santos had delivered a sound start to 2015, including higher production, excellent progress on GLNG commissioning and exploration success offshore Malaysia.</p> <p>“I am pleased to report strong progress at GLNG, where first LNG is now expected around the end of the third quarter, within the US$18.5 billion budget.”</p> <p>“First gas was introduced into the LNG plant in early March and the first two gas turbine generators which provide electrical power supply to the plant are running.”</p> <p>Sales revenue was 10% lower primarily due to the fall in global oil prices, partially offset by stronger domestic gas prices and a weaker Australian dollar.</p> <p>Mr Knox said the company had taken prompt and decisive actions to respond to the current low oil price environment.</p> <p>“First quarter capital expenditure was 40% lower than last year, and we continue to make solid inroads towards reducing production costs per barrel across the business,” Mr Knox said.</p> <p>During the quarter, Santos also announced a significant oil discovery at the Bestari-1 exploration well offshore Malaysia. The well encountered 67 metres of net oil pay in multiple sand packages within the primary Miocene age formation. The oil bearing sands are of high quality with good porosity and permeability.</p> <p>All guidance for 2015 is maintained.</p> <h3>Comparative performance at a glance</h3> <table><tbody> <tr> <td width="40%"><strong>Corresponding period</strong></td> <td width="20%"><strong>Q1 2015</strong></td> <td width="20%"><strong>Q1 2014</strong></td> <td width="20%"><strong>Change</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Production (mmboe)</td> <td>14.0</td> <td>12.2</td> <td>+15%</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Sales (mmboe)</td> <td>15.2</td> <td>13.8</td> <td>+10%</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Average realised oil price (A$/bbl)</td> <td>72</td> <td>129</td> <td>-44%</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Sales revenue ($million)</td> <td>825</td> <td>913</td> <td>-10%</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Capital expenditure (A$million)</td> <td>566</td> <td>944</td> <td>-40%</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <table><tbody> <tr> <td width="40%"><strong>Quarterly comparison</strong></td> <td width="20%"><strong>Q1 2015</strong></td> <td width="20%"><strong>Q4 2014</strong></td> <td width="20%"><strong>Change</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Production (mmboe)</td> <td>14.0</td> <td>15.1</td> <td>-7%</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Sales (mmboe)</td> <td>15.2</td> <td>18.0</td> <td>-16%</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Average realised oil price (A$/bbl)</td> <td>72</td> <td>92</td> <td>-22%</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Sales revenue ($million)</td> <td>825</td> <td>1,090</td> <td>-24%</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Capital expenditure (A$million)</td> <td>566</td> <td>893</td> <td>-37%</td> </tr> </tbody></table> <p>Sales gas, ethane and gas to LNG production of 63.2 petajoules for the quarter was 25% higher than the corresponding quarter, reflecting a full quarter of PNG LNG production. Total sales gas, ethane and LNG sales revenue jumped 78% to $520 million for the quarter.</p> <p>Quarterly crude oil production of 2.0 million barrels was 22% lower than the previous quarter, primarily due to scheduled dry dock maintenance of the Mutineer-Exeter/Fletcher Finucane FPSO during the first quarter. The average oil price for the quarter was A$72 per barrel, 22% lower than the previous quarter, reflecting lower global oil prices partially offset by a weaker Australian dollar. Santos strikes new gas supply contract with Alcoa
<p>Santos today announced that it had entered a contract to supply natural gas to Australia’s biggest alumina producer, Alcoa of Australia Limited.  </p> <p>The contract commences in 2018 and will see Santos supply 82PJ of gas to Alcoa over an initial contract term of five years from the John Brookes field in the offshore Carnarvon Basin. The contract allows for two five year extension options by mutual agreement.</p> <p>Santos General Manager WA&NT, Brett Woods, said the contract with Alcoa was the start of what he hoped would be a long and mutually beneficial partnership.</p> <p>“This is a significant contract for us, not only in terms of its value but also in its tie-up with WA’s biggest buyer of natural gas,” he said.</p> <p>“I am confident it will set the foundation for a long, fruitful association between the two companies allowing for other gas supply opportunities to be explored.”</p> <p>“This contract also consolidates our place as one of the biggest suppliers of domestic gas in WA, a market share we want to grow.”</p> <p>Santos is a leading supplier of domestic gas across Australia, and, in WA, all of its gas production is sold into the domestic market.</p> <ul class="filelist"> <li class="file-pdf"> <a href="/library/090315_Santos_strikes_new_gas_supply_contract_with_Alcoa.pdf" id="ctl00_cphMain_ancAttachment" target="_blank">Download this news announcement <span>(70 kb)</span></a> </li> </ul>

Strong landholder support for Santos in Narrabri
<p>Fourth generation Narrabri farmer Jeremy Gett has expressed his support for Santos’ operations on his land. Mr Gett, who has natural gas pilot wells on his family property, says he would never support any activities that jeopardise his family’s future.</p> <p>Mr Gett tells his story in the first of a series of video features that highlight the support Santos has in the local Narrabri community and the benefits our operations bring to the area now and into the future.</p> <p>Jeremy’s farm produces cereal and beef cattle on 1600 hectares outside Narrabri.</p> <p>For 60 years, Santos, an Australian company, has operated safely and in partnerships with landholders like the Gett family and communities like Narrabri and others.</p> <p>Mr Gett, who also works for Santos’ Narrabri operations team, reiterates that Santos are “extra vigilant” in all operations to ensure natural gas is extracted safely and the surrounding environment is protected.</p> <p>“If I thought oil and gas could harm my farm in any way long term, it wouldn’t be happening on my place,” Mr Gett says.<br>“Coal seam gas is nothing new to me. It has been in this area around Yarrie Lake, I think I was around 8 the first time I saw a gas well. I’m 40 in a few months</p> <p>“I’m a fourth generation farmer and I also work for Santos. Farming is my first passion. I was born and bred on the land obviously. My son is 15, he’s fifth generation. We have been here for 100 years - 100 years last month, the Gett family have been in this district.</p> <p>“I love the land and I would never do anything to jeopardise our future here. To supply NSW with a significant part of their energy supply would be something I would be very proud of.”</p> <p>Mr Gett dismissed claims that natural gas exploration has resulted in gas bubbling out of the ground.<br>“The only gas I know of in bores, goes back years and years. When you hear the old timers talking about some of these artesian bores, they could light them. And that’s years ago before there was any sort of exploration in this area.”</p> <p>Santos’ Narrabri Gas Project could supply up to half of NSW natural gas to meet the needs of the one million NSW households and 34,000 businesses that rely on gas for affordable cleaner energy. The project will create up to 1,200 jobs during construction and 200 ongoing positions.</p> <p>Mr Gett says it’s these jobs that will help train and support the future generations and encourage teenagers like his children to stay in the local area.</p> <p>“Modern farming techniques and much larger machinery have decreased the need for farm labour,” Mr Get says.<br>“My children are lucky enough to have a rural background and a family farm, to support them if they decide to choose that path, other young people have no option but to leave the area to pursue a career or even to find a labouring job.</p> <p>“We need diverse industries like the energy industry that provide employment and other opportunities for the next generation.<br>“In the past 100 years we’ve seen the arrival of the cotton industry, irrigators and others – all of which were initially opposed, but are now valued parts of the local community and the local economy.</p> <p>“I have no doubt that the energy industry will be seen in the same way.”</p> <p>Santos is currently finalising the Environmental Impact Statement for the Project which is an important step in ensuring the development meets the highest environmental standards.</p> <p><a title="Jeremy Gett, Santos Landholder" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMELtxx003Y" target="_blank">View the video here.</a><br></p> <ul class="filelist"> <li class="file-pdf"> <a href="/library/150225%20Strong%20Landholder%20support%20for%20Santos%20in%20Narrabri.pdf" id="ctl00_cphMain_ancAttachment" target="_blank">Download this news announcement <span>(92 kb)</span></a> </li> </ul>
