The Met Office is a trading fund within the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, operating on a commercial basis under set targets. As the UK's National Weather Service it provides a range of weather and climate services to a large number of public and private sector organisations. It also represents the UK within the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and plays a prominent role in international meteorology. As a result of a recent supercomputer upgrade the Met Office is looking to upgrade its Scientific Post-processing and Intensive Compute Environment (SPICE) in order to deliver a replacement of existing hardware and storage capabilities, and a radical change in middleware and toolsets that will enable science to perform more efficiently making better use of available compute and storage resources. The intent is the provision of a highly capable and scalable compute installation which will enable a range of non-HPC scientific data processing, including capability for post processing of model outputs, Research and Development activities, Collaborative work and routine administration including code building and the preparation of data for visualisation.   The Met Office currently plans that this replacement SPICE environment be commissioned and accepted autumn / winter 2015. As a result the Met Office is considering inviting expressions of interest via the Open procedure within the Official Journal of the European Union. A  Prior Information Notice has been issued to inform the market that a draft ITT will be issued within two weeks of the publication of the PIN, for the market to respond with draft responses in early April 2015.  The Met Office request that the responses include a response to each section of the draft ITT, with suppliers highlighting any significant challenges.  An indicative budget is also requested as part of the return.   It is expected that at the end of April 2015 this will be followed the release of an Open OJEU advert. The Early Market Engagement period will end with the release of an Open OJEU advert. The Met Office will be seeking a defined product solution as opposed to building the system ourselves; therefore interested parties must recognise this fact.  If this opportunity is of interest please express your interest in this requirement so that issue of the draft ITT can be arranged when it is available. The document is subject to change as a result of Early Supplier Market Engagement, funding opportunities and the evolving business requirement.

Investigation of particular physical processes over the Tibetan Plateau region should then be fully linked through to their downstream impacts on regional climate over East Asia.

CSSP China will focus on five primary areas of research: This competition is related to Work Package Five: Climate Services Development of translational science for climate services Translational science here refers to multi-disciplinary approaches (e.g. social sciences and economics) to producing useable and useful knowledge and applications to bridge the gap between climate science and societal use of climate services for societal benefit.  In year 1 of the CSSP-China a short initial study has been undertaken to scope out the current status of translational science and determine the key gaps for further targeted research and development in subsequent years.  WPs1-4 are developing underpinning scientific knowledge, information and modelling systems, and this work stream should both build on those other activities, and help shape the science across CSSP particularly to help inform future underpinning activities. Work is needed to better understand the context in China, and develop ideas from the initial year 1 study into plans for research and development throughout the duration of the CSSP.

Contribution to ACRE China (CSSP WP1_2) This call is for a commissioned piece of work designed to unlock the potential of historical observations of terrestrial and marine meteorological variables including temperature, precipitation and pressure. It will recover historical observations, both within China and from surrounding countries, for the mid 19th to mid 20th centuries.   This work is needed as part of the wider ACRE contribution to CSSP-China, which aims to develop a better understanding of how East Asian climate has changed over the historical past and to facilitate the development of dynamical reanalyses. Consequently this call is tightly defined.
